Björk — Volta

Let me make one thing clear. I despise record reviews. I think they’re always written by
Sorry, those sentences weren’t going anywhere. I liked them though, so instead of deleting them I’m going to leave them there with a line through.
Anyway, record reviews. When the writer has taken great pains to squash as much praise [...]

What is this new form of humour?

Recently (i.e., over the last few years) I’ve been noticing a new form of humour. Maybe it’s always been around and is becoming more fashionable, I don’t know. I’m not really someone who likes to take creative things completely to pieces to look at them, I think it’s disrespectful somehow. Find out how they work, [...]

Rufus Wainwright is totally luscious

You should all go out immediately and buy his album. I’ve been listening to Want (2 discs!) and I’ve been really impressed. His music is really varied and generally amazing. If you’re familiar with classical music, you’ll recognise its influence on a lot of tracks.
I also like the way he’s worked with loads of people [...]

Matmos — The Rose has Teeth, in the Mouth of a Beast

I’ve been listening to some of Matmos’s stuff since they worked on Björk’s fifth album, Vespertine.
I’m currently listening to Lift up your hat! which is from their album Quasi-objects. It’s made entirely from samples taken from the needle of a record player catching on the last track of an LP, and I find it extremely [...]

The best bit in any song, ever

I’m pretty sure that we heard this song while we were in South America. I think it came on the radio or something, and I remember Claire laughing her face off at it and saying how excellent it was (I believe the word she used was “terrible”).
And it is pretty excellent to be fair.
The bit [...]

Are y’interested?

Been listening a lot recently to Joanna Newsom’s album, The Milk-Eyed Mender. I saw her live a few years ago in Leeds, in a funny little pub (where, co-incidentally, there was a member of the cast of Emmerdale amongst the audience) and she was captivating.
She plays all but two of the songs on the harp, [...]

Kate Bush — Aerial

I like this album because she sings pi to 138 decimal places. Anyone who can sing “six six four seven zero nine three eight four four six zero nine five five zero five eight two two three” so nicely and emotively has to be a genius, in my opinion. It’s almost as good as Björk’s [...]

Essay finishation

Will, I finishated my essay. I also use the word ‘well’ too much. Yeah, so I got it to 1, 600 words, or there abouts. 1, 662 to be exact. That is 92 % of the word limit so I’m happy.
I recently got the marks back for my last essay (which I bloggerated about all [...]

Saturday by Ian McEwan

I’ve just finished reading Saturday by Ian McEwan. The novel takes place over the course of a day, and it recounts what happens to the neurosurgeon Henry Perowne. The story takes place in London, on the day of the anti-war march.
Some of the things I liked best in the book were the observations McEwan makes [...]

The post to make up for the crappy posts of late

Well, my posts lately have been a little crappy, what with being just things like “look at this site” or “look at this part of my site” so I’ve decided to try to make this post really good! I also read something over at A List Apart about making your blog something other than “look [...]
