Constructed Languages

I love languages, and I found this site a few years ago, but came across it again today.

I find the “Constructed scripts” really interesting, it’s basically made up alphabets. It’s quite geeky. I mean, this is stuff done by people who obviously have quite a lot of spare time. Some of them are rubbish, but some are really beautiful. Like Ayeri, for example.

I like the fact that people are interested enough in something that’s entirely imaginary, and of no use to the real world whatsoever, to make up symbols for an alphabet. I think most of them are from fantasy novel writers. Fantasy novel writers always tend to be a little bit other-worldly and obsessive about tiny details of worlds that don’t exist.

Anyway, just something that dragged me away from invoicing for a few moments today.

LOLCat Bible Translation Project

I just found this. It’s my new favourite site. It’s the Bible translated into lolcat. I like the first chapter of Jeremiah the best:

1 Jeremiah wuz son of Hilkiah, a preest frum Anathoth in teh land of Benjamin. He sed dis stuff.2 Ceiling Cat came to him in the thirteenth year of the reign of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah.3 and through the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, down to the fifth month of the eleventh year of Zedekiah son of Josiah king of Judah, when the people of Jerusalem went into exile. Neways…

4 Ceiling Cat sed:

5 “Oh hai! Befour I maed u I knew u. U pwn n ur a prophet, k?”

6 I sed “No wai!”

7 Ceiling Cat sed “Wai! Do wut I tells u!8 Dun worry, I can help.”

9 Den Ceiling Cat touched me an sed, “I’m in ur mouf, givin u werds.”

Hmm, not done that in a while*

Been doing fairly well the last couple of weeks on this here blog. Haven’t posted one of those “can’t be bothered writing something proper so here’s a link” for a while.

That said…

Can’t be bothered writing something proper so here’s a link:

havesomehats

Best ever. I mean, I could happily sit and look at these drawings for hours. I mean really, I have sat at my computer and looked at these drawings for hours. I just want to somehow push them into myself so that they can become part of me.

* Jakob Nielsen, who with his recent column Life-Long Computer Skills confirmed his status as cleverer than God, wrote about usability on blogs, and one of the things he mentioned was that blog posts should have titles that are relevant to the content. Well, I’ve broken that rule here and what a pity. Sometimes I think if he could have his way, he’d have all punch-lines published before the jokes, with the jokes all clearly annotated with all the context explained and a detailed discussion of why, precisely, something was funny in the first place. He’s still cleverer than God, though.

Gift ideas

Instead of buying people gifts, why not hide something they really love and then reveal it to them a couple of weeks afterwards. That way they get to value stuff they already own all over again!

This idea came to me after it became clear that my iPod, Barry, has either gone on vacation or been kidnapped. I’m still clinging to the hope that one of my housemates has spirited it away.

I stayed up all night last night working on shefbase.com! I’ve gone a little mad!

My housemate, the artist

Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the amazingness that is Kier Mustoe.

Kier, who hails from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, recently started a photoblog, which he showed me earlier today. Immediately I saw the photos, I began to bleed internally with bitter, bitter jealousy at his superior photography skills.

Why not go and do the same: Kier Mustoe’s Photoblog.

We went on a walk tonight, quite late, to take night-time photos and it was really good fun. Finally I was able to take silly photos from silly angles and lie on the floor and stuff and it was socially acceptable because someone else was there. I should like to do the same again soon!

I am changing an opinion!

Regulars to the site (especially from long, long ago) may have picked up that I used to have a pronounced dislike of Richard & Judy (especially Richard).

Well, not any more!

Read this post by Adam Buxton (of Adam and Joe fame) about humiliating TV experiences and watch the video at the end (which is the most hilarious thing I’ve ever seen in the world).

I have gone from really being annoyed at Richard and Judy to quite liking them. And also, I want to buy the rights to Mark Lamarr and have him shot.
