A maths problem

I am eating a cake that’s made out of two types of cake: chocolate and lemon. (Seriously, this isn’t hypothetical, I’m doing it right now, I love working in catering).

Now, eating two types of cake technically means that I’m eating two cakes. If I eat two slices (and I have done), how many cakes have I eaten?

a) 2
b) 4

If you answer correctly in the comments, I will tell you why sometimes you see a bar across zeroes.

(Also, if you answer incorrectly, I will tell you anyway.)

Whatever it is, you’ve not eaten enough, so go and eat a bit more.

  • well, you have eaten zero cakes.

you have, however, eaten two kinds of cake. so A.

  • The answer of course is neither a) nor b), I’ve only eaten part of one cake. Trick question :)

The reason why you sometimes see a diagonal line across zeros (in certain fonts) is, of course, so that you don’t fall in.
