Interesting things I have been reading of late

Today I don’t have any proper content, so I’m posting links. But there’s blurbs attached, so it’s not all bad news.

Wikipedia

Where would I be without Wikipedia? It is rapidly becoming one of my favourite sites, being the source of information for pretty much anything I want to know.

Recently, I’ve been particularly interested by the articles on Masculism, the ideological compliment to Feminism (and not just a stroppy backlash, either), and Misandry, the equivalent of misogyny.

The Cartoon Blog

More specifically, the entry about Post Charismatics. It’s interesting to me because the Church I grew up in was charismatic. He also links to a very interesting site on the same topic.

Dubious Ministries, by the same guy, is very funny — a parody of the way many charismatic Churches talk about themselves.

Online Etymology Dictionary

I recently discovered a way of telling the words etymology, the study of the history of words, and entymology, the study of insects. Well, it’s really very simple: entymology is about insects, and both words contain the letter N.

To me, discovering the history of words and languages is like looking into the ocean. There is so much depth and life, and I find it fascinating. For instance, did you know that the words “lust” and “listless” are related because they come from a root word meaning “pleasure”? I only just learnt that!

www.etymonline.com (especially the entry for the verb “be”)

Wow, that site looks amazing. The post-Charismatic one, I mean. I’ve been looking at the Cartoon Blog / CartoonChurch.com for a while. And you know I already love etymology. I presume..? (By the way, you must learn some German and historical German linguistics if you are interested in English etymology!)

No, the post-Charismatic one speaks to a lot of the things I’ve been thinking about over the last little while. I will look forward to exploring it in more depth in future. And maybe discussing some outcomes with you? By email, of course, not public comment posts.
