I have been wanting to bitch about this sign for a very long time. I see this sign every time I’m in town, and it always annoys me.

Thermae Bath Spa was supposed to open in 2002. Through disputes with contractors, and a number of setbacks in its construction (peeling paint, flooring being pulled up, yobs breaking windows … the list goes on) the opening keeps getting set back, and the estimated price has gone from £13 million to £35 million. It’s a total farce.

Apart from the amazing bungling of the project itself, this sign irritates me because of its “interesting” use of the letter Λ, chosen supposedly to make the letter “A” look a bit Roman.

Which is funny because, “Λ” is the Greek letter lambda. And also, lambda is equivalent to our “L”, so transliterated, the name of this project is “Thermle Blth Spl”.

As I said, it’s a farce!
