Opera Mini, pt. 2

Well here’s the whole deal. Opera Mini is a tiny version of Opera, the browser, for your phone! It’s completely free and works on almost any phone, and allows you to access more pages than with your normal WAP browser. (It’s also easier to use).

To get it, point your phone to http://mini.opera.com/, and take it from there!

(To see more about it, you can visit the Opera Mini website where you can find a simulater that acts just like the real thing.)

Theology

I’ve been doing some thinking recently, and I’ve come to a few conclusions. Well, one conclusion, really.

And that is that modern theology misses the point somewhat drastically. For you see, modern theology apparently ignores the fact that God himself visited the French, in their infancy, and taught them how to make wonderful cheese.

French cheese verges on the numinous. I seriously believe that. If you ever want to have a religious experience, go and have some French cheese. Forget drugs, they’re pointless. Eat French cheese, the emotional experience is far better.

God bless French Cheese!

(Commenters who disagree will be excommunicated. Or at least their comments will be changed so that they appear to agree with me.)

Interesting things I have been reading of late

Today I don’t have any proper content, so I’m posting links. But there’s blurbs attached, so it’s not all bad news.

Wikipedia

Where would I be without Wikipedia? It is rapidly becoming one of my favourite sites, being the source of information for pretty much anything I want to know.

Recently, I’ve been particularly interested by the articles on Masculism, the ideological compliment to Feminism (and not just a stroppy backlash, either), and Misandry, the equivalent of misogyny.

The Cartoon Blog

More specifically, the entry about Post Charismatics. It’s interesting to me because the Church I grew up in was charismatic. He also links to a very interesting site on the same topic.

Dubious Ministries, by the same guy, is very funny — a parody of the way many charismatic Churches talk about themselves.

Online Etymology Dictionary

I recently discovered a way of telling the words etymology, the study of the history of words, and entymology, the study of insects. Well, it’s really very simple: entymology is about insects, and both words contain the letter N.

To me, discovering the history of words and languages is like looking into the ocean. There is so much depth and life, and I find it fascinating. For instance, did you know that the words “lust” and “listless” are related because they come from a root word meaning “pleasure”? I only just learnt that!

Whoops!

When I was very small, there used to be a charity shop in Bath called Whoops!

I remember it well because it had a play area in it that I really appreciated as a child being dragged around boring shops.

Anyway, I also remember finding the name irredeemably hilarious, because it implied that the clothes had been soiled (faecally) prior to their being dropped off at the store.

On being in a tank

I had planned to write “I’m blogging to you from the inside of a giant tank” but unfortunately WAP = CRAP so I shall have to do this post the traditional way via a keyboard.

As I mentioned on Monday, I have been working in a chemical recovery plant. I was a little brief in my post then, so I shall elaborate today.

My Dad has been doing some work for a company which involves setting up a tank system to clean some water for them. It’s actually quite clever! There are two tanks which I spent most of the morning filling with these little plastic bastards:

Sharp little plastic bastards, designed to cut you. That and increase the surface area.

As you can see, they look like giant pasta shapes. There were about 200 large bags full of them, and I spent the better half of Monday hand-cranking them up a total height of 4m to the top of the tanks.

Once there, they had to be poured into the tanks, and then I had to get in with them and make sure they were evenly distributed. That was quite fun actually: not only did they cut my wrists to shreds (sleeves kept rolling up), but they were also like quicksand which meant I kept sinking in them. Plus there were loads of pipes in the way, it was like some sort of horrible 3D maze.

Here’s another photo:

More sharp bastards!

And the ladder to the top of the tank, just to give you some idea of perspective:

Tank ladder: very fun to climb due to all the oil all over the place.

Anyway, back to the sharp bastards and their purpose. They are there to provide a surface for anaerobic microbes to grow on. These microbes break down the oil in the water to smaller hydrocarbons like methane (I think). I made a diagram! (You should note that I couldn’t be bothered to draw the bastards on the other side of the tank, but I assure you they were there.)

Water enters at the top of the tank, passes over baffles to remove gasses, goes down a pipe to the bottom of the tank and then moves up through anaerobic bacteria which process the chemicals. The water exits near the top of the tank.

Well now, to complete your multimedia experience I also made a little video of the inside of the tank. It’s a bit crappy, and consists only of me saying “Well, this is the inside of a tank” but then again you do get to hear my voice.
