The difference between Camembert and Brie

How, exactly, to distinguish between these two excellent French cheeses has always eluded me. They are, in fact, very similar but there are important differences. In this very important and completely not pointless post, I’m going to give you the facts!

  • Brie is made with more butterfat, making it oozier and creamier.
  • Camembert is made with Penicillium camemberti, while Brie is made with Brevibacterium linens.
  • Brie is flatter and wider than camembert.
  • Brie tastes a little more mushroomy.

So now you know. And now I desperately need to eat some.

Neighbours is 20 years old!

Well, today I turned on the TV to catch the credits of today’s Neighbours episode. What should greet me but about a million past members of the cast! It certainly was a blast from the past. (May I just point out how utterly boring this post is). Anyway, caught the actual episode in the afternoon (oh yes, I had time to wait) and I have to say I have never been more ashamed to cry at something on TV before in my life. Well, I didn’t actually cry, but I almost did. Well, I almost almost did.

It’s funny, actual real life rarely makes me cry. I cry more often at books, TV, films and, although rarely, music. Weird that. Or maybe it isn’t. Perhaps crying isn’t as big a deal as it’s sometimes made out to be.

Also recently I have been listening to Hanne Hukkelberg’s latest (don’t you just love it the way people drop names into blog posts as though everyone else knows about them except you) entitled Little Things which is quite delightfully bizarre. My favourite lyric is “I wish I could convert to waves and become the sea” set to a lovely tune.

The man came to look at my PC today. He said it might be the motherboard or the processor. Well when I find out which one it is, I will boil it. Little horror! I may even boil the wireless broadband thing too, for good measure, because I know it’s guilty of crimes against my computer!

Anyway, check out Amazon’s entry for the Hanne Hukkelberg album. The track I like is called Conversion. Before I go, though, why on earth are Amazon’s URLs so bloody long! It’s a mystery to me.

So, what did I do today?

Answer: nothing. It’s actually horrible doing nothing. The cerebral graveyard that is daytime TV has lost its charm since I graduated, not that it had much charm before then anyway. Phoned round to get some quotes to fix my PC, and also for driving lessons. The cheapest is £19 for each lesson. Each lesson! It’s disgusting… BSM tried to make me pay £42!!!!! As if. They even tried to get my number so they could phone me back to pester me. Well, I didn’t spend a few weeks in Anglian Windows and Conservatories for nothing. No sir, I know all the tricks telecanvassers pull.

Anyway, I’ve taken some photos. Something in this little box is NOT PLAYING NICE.

Comp-u-guts!

Comp-u-guts!

If anyone can tell me what’s not being a good little component, I would be most pleased. Someone’s coming round to fix it tomorrow, but I have the most horrible feeling that it will involve replacing the motherboard. If only it was something as simple as me forgetting to plug something in or something. Dammit!

The post to make up for the crappy posts of late

Well, my posts lately have been a little crappy, what with being just things like “look at this site” or “look at this part of my site” so I’ve decided to try to make this post really good! I also read something over at A List Apart about making your blog something other than “look at this site”, and having discovered dooce.com I have new drive to write properly, at least for a while :D.

I’m currently watching Weeds which is just about the best thing I have ever seen. Well, at least in the last few months. It’s just so good. It’s really funny, and the lead character, Nancy, is really human and wonderful. I love it.

I’ve also just seen that new Solpadeine advert. If you’re in the UK, next time you watch TV look out for it. It features a naked guy all contorted with his head stuck simultaneously in the ground and up his ass *, or at least that’s how it seems to me. Anyway, it’s a stupid and weird advert.

Currently, I have been temping. So far I have been put to work (doesn’t that make it sound like I’ve been confined to a poorhouse :D ) as a cleaner, where one of the tenants quizzed me about a previous employee (who evidently I was standing in for) who had promised to be a witness in some case involving a gun. I have also been employed to promote a certain newspaper in a certain supermarket, which was actually a lot of fun. I have been responsible for the sales of 362 newspapers over the last two days. Woot! This week I am going to work in data entry, which sounds like I’m doing something unseemly to a member of the cast of Star Trek: Next Generation, but will in fact involve punching nnumbers into a computer. Well, it’s not much different from “designing” a website, which is what I’ve been doing at the same time. That involves punching letters into a machine and watching the tiny but oh-so-important changes on the screen when I press refresh. It’s lonely and pointless work, hehe, but I love it. Some guy just said, “I know what you did. I know you stole that goat. Goat thief!” Just thought you ought to know.

Also read a good book recently. It’s called Case Histories, and it’s by Kate Atkinson. It’s about a private detective called Jackson who solves missing people cases. It’s her best since Behind the Scenes at the Museum, which was sheer mastery and had me blubbering like a, well I can’t think of a good enough analogy, but it made me cry. And so did this book!

Just flicked over to Most Haunted, one of those ghost shows. Did it used to be presented by Yvette Fielding? I can’t remember. Anyway, the one with Yvette was really funny. They’d get Yvette down in some cellar and say there was ghosts in the place, and then she’s feel something touch her. I always expected to see Person In Charge Of Squeezing Yvette’s Hand on the credits, but it never appeared. Currently there are two guys in a graveyard, and it’s actually quite spooky. One of them just fell down a hole! It was really scary! I have goose pimples, and I think I’m going to go to bed before I get really scared. There’s enough swearing to take the edge off though :D

* Yes, I have used the American spelling here. But only because it sounds better in this context…

Forty-one Anomalies of Water

Wow! There are 41 anomalous properties of water. I did not know that.

I think this is part of my sister’s homework or something. If you’re particularly interested by water, as I evidently am, or have nothing to do for a while, go and take a peek.

The best woman in the world

I know I do a lot of these “go to this site, I can’t be bothered to post a real post” posts, but this site is hilarious. Now here‘s a blog that is impossible to dislike: it’s actually interesting, which is more than I can say for this one other, not very interesting sites.
