Nazca!

We’re in Nazca now, staying in a lovely hotel whose owners are quite the most fantastic people I have ever met. They’re sisters, and they’re really kind and nice! They made a special offer on the price of our rooms that was about a million pounds less than the asking price. Give or take a few hundred thousand.

On the bus over (4 hours) there was this American couple who insisted on sining songs from the shows. We were treated to something from Oliver, I think, and maybe some more. Me and Claire decided that their names should be Terry and June. It was quite sweet, but I couldn’t stop laughing because I am immature and very cruel.

These posts are really short because I can never remember what happened. I have a journal which I’m keeping which is full of all our interesting exploits, but it’s in the hotel so I can’t consult it. You’re just gonna get random scraps of stuff!

Today we went to the Ballestas Islands to see some penguins and sea lions! They were incredible. The penguins were, as might be expected, very sweet and toddly, and the sea lions were quite fantastic. We were near their cave and they were singing, it was really interesting. It was like shouting and screaming, only it was coming from sea lions. Really good…

Hmmm… what else. Oh yeah, the hotel owners gave us a lift over to the hotel and the back seat was soaking wet. Even more Oh yeah! - we’re going to see the ground carvings by aeroplane tomorrow! So exciting! Basically we’re all piling into a tiny aeroplane and we’re all gonna die, but before we do, we’ll see the most incredible things in the world and be in an aeroplane. I did bagsy the front seat by the pilot, much to Ailis’ chagrin, so I shall be very happy indeed. And scared.

The internet cafe we’re in has a scary film playing which at the moment is a lot of people screaming and what sounds like explosions. Can’t see the screen, but it’s very good.

Taking loads of photos. Can’t upload them now, cos it’s too difficult, but will try to get something like a gallery up when I get back. Also, might augment some posts with stuff from journal, we’ll wait and see.

The food in Peru is wonderful and plentiful. They keep giving loads, sometimes more than you can manage, but you make yourself eat it cos it’s just too amazing not to. Anything “rellenas” is really nice (normally potato or avocado). The last restuarant we were at had the most amazing service. Took ages to order and arrive, but both courses come at once (this was in Pisco). Also, Pisco sours are amazing. They are sour and Pisco-y (whatever on earth I intend that to mean, and I’m not sure myself) and have egg white fluff (uncooked egg white) and they’re delicious.

We just ate chicken and chips (an idea I was strongly against) and me and Ailis failed both Queen and Country by not finishing it. Yes, I know, I can hear the screams of dismay even as I write. Still nobody has any change. Here’s a tip for travellers: Get loads of change.

Over here the keyboards are really good. The < and > are on the same key, so it makes writing tags really easy. That’s a random fact that I bet you didn’t want to know.

Not sure what else to say… Oh! They have cakes everywhere it’s so incredibly wonderful. On the sides of streets, in cafes, in special cakeshops (a brilliant word) it’s actually great.

We went to a supermarket in Lima. It was cleaner than many I’ve been in in France! So that’s something to think about Carrefour. Talking of France, there are a few French travellers here that I really want to talk to (in French, of course) because I’m dying to speak in a non-English language that I can actually speak properly! My Spanish is improving though, no end. So that’s good.

Oh dear, I’m taking up too much time, friends anxious to get on the internet. The internet cafe seems to be run by two nine year olds, it’s quite brilliant. Anyway, til next time, hasta la vista (which does actually mean “til next time”, but whatever).

Hello from Peru!

So, we arrived a while ago in Peru. Staying in a little hotel called Hotel España in Lima. Lima is gorgeous. We were lucky enough to arrive on Peru’s national day - their independence. We saw a parade go by (they had horses which marched in time to the music!) and the President.

The flight over was about a million hours long, it was actually incredible. Because we were flying west, we were basically chasing the dawn, so it never got dark. They played four films back to back, all of which were rubbish :( but Alex got sick so I had his food. There was a Peruvian family on the flight, and their toddler kept, well, toddling about, and he was the best behaved toddler I’ve ever seen! He didn’t cry or make a sound or anything, I was very grateful.

When we touched down, I realised that I had absolutely no idea what my PIN was for my ATM card (basically the only way I can get money) so that was mildly terrifying, but I was pleased to find that my mobile worked, so I was able to get my parents to text it to me. Modern technology!

When we first arrived I was quite anxious about stuff (mugging, diseases, etc.) but now I’ve been here a while I’m a lot more relaxed. The Peruvians are really friendly. Yesterday (national day) we wore Peruvian flag badges, and people were really pleased to see it. Although they did think we were American, which was quite funny and slightly annoying.

Oh yeah! Nearly forgot… First night in the hostel, two Americans walked in and I woke up suddenly. I’m normally a really heavy sleeper, so that was really strange. Anyway, being slightly disorientated I said, “Hello, what’s going on!” much to their consternation. I think they laughed and said, “Shine the light in his face” so I lay back and went back to sleep. Claire, apparently, sat up in her sleep and looked over at someone else on one of the other beds and shouted, “Are you still here?” Don’t think he woke up, but it’s still hilarious. Been waking up really early each morning, it’s quite good. Tomorrow I’m just gonna get up when I wake up and read or something.

Mornings are really nice, so far. It’s quiter than in the day. People drive like maniacs, it’s very good, and they beep their horns almost constantly.

We’ve had a couple of good meals so far. Restaurants in Lima are plentiful, and the food is really nice. Had Papas a la humankshfksafh or however that last word is spelt, and they were really nice. It’s basically potatoes in a creamy pepper sauce. Also had Bisteck a la Pobre, which is steak with chips, egg and a banana! It’s very easy to find a good restaurant in Lima (a note to future travellers).

Tomorrow we’re up early to get the bus to Pisco. My Spanish helped us get those tickets! I can get by quite slowly. There are French people staying here, so I might take the opportunity to babble away in a language I know.

Anyway, got to be getting on and check emails etc. If people want personalised messages, they only have to email me! beingmrkenny@gmail.com

Chloroquine and Proguanil

As a measure against malaria, I am taking the above drugs. And yes, they’ve really started to kick in: I am feeling sick (which must mean they’re working). Perhaps this is one of the side effects.

Stupid malaria, we blatantly aren’t gonna go anywhere near anything remotely malarial, and I’m just risking the health of my liver (anti-malarials are known to be awful for livers) for nothing. Probably.

Well, you never know, I suppose, better safe than sorry and all that. Although, if I do suffer complete liver failure, I don’t know that I’m particularly safe…

Nine Planets Without Intelligent Life

Nine Planets Without Intelligent Life

Start at episode 1 and carry on clicking next until you have read them all. This guy is a genius.

And I love the horizontal scrolling, by the way. I don’t care what Jakob Nielsen says, sometimes it is brilliant.

I know what the mystery tree is!

What kind of tree is this?

It’s walnut! Yesterday we went past one, and my Dad said, “Oh look a walnut tree,” so now I know. And so do all of you!

And to think, I’ve eaten pickled walnut! I should have recognised it…

I have the best hat

What a great title for a post. Go to buff.es and check them out. I want more! They’re so great! Except for the fact that everybody says you look like an idiot. I still think they’re great tho.
