Jamie Oliver

All and sundry

Well, I am currently watching Jamie Oliver’s Jamie’s School Dinners, his attempt to change London kids’ school dinners.

I’ll be honest and say that I used to hate him. Well, when he first appeared I quite liked him, but then he did all those ghastly Sainsbury’s ads and my opinion changed quicker than you could say “public opinion”. But now I’m watching his show, and I think what he’s doing is completely incredible. I have nothing but the highest respect for him. Some kids’ diets are nothing short of shocking; high fat and low fibre. They just showed an X-ray of a child’s intestine, showing the compacted food. The paediatric dietician said that the food got so packed up that some kids brought it up out of their small intestines — actually bringing up semi-formed faeces, it’s actually disgusting.

I’ve got to the bit where they ban the bad junk food in the school kitchens, and the kids are complaining their little faces off. Fair enough, tho, I’d probably have done the same ;)

I found his diary, which looks interesting, and this news item.
