Horror Movies

All and sundry, Memories

Well, I’m currently watching The Ring. (You know it’s actually a bad thing that I now watch the TV with a browser open (altho this is the first time I’ve done it) I think the internet is becoming part of me. Anyway.) It’s the proper Japanese version, mind you.

I’ve seen the American version before, so I know what happens, kinda. I’m enjoying the scary atmosphere without being actually scared… Well, maybe just a little :)

It reminded me of a horror movie I watched in first year (2002) with my housemate. We switched onto this documentary about these four guys, one of whom was some sort of magician. Anyway, they go off in search of some kind of monster, the Jersey Devil, which involves a trip into a forest.

Three of the guys die and only two of their bodies are recovered, the third never being found. Anyway it progresses as normal, following their last few hours, and piecing together what happened to them. The survivor, the magician guy, was charged with their murders. He kills himself in jail, and the documentary ends there.

However it starts up again when a box of video tape arrives on the doorstep. Just a big box of loose tape. He takes it to some restorer or something, and they go through it as she restores it. Bear in mind that me and Tim have been watching this up until now, thinking the whole thing was an actual documentary about real events. Anyway, as they go through the tape, more of the story emerges, with lots of scary shots of people seeing things behind the camera and running away. Then the camera being dropped and the cameraman running away. Very scary indeed. The final bit they restore starts of with a gray blob. Then, bit by terrifying bit, the gray blog begins to take shape into the face of whatever or whoever it was that killed the three other guys. I won’t tell you what it was, you should watch the film and find out. Anyway, the next shot was of the documentary maker killing the video restorer.

It was at this point that me and Tim exchanged glances, checked the paper and found that it was a film. How foolish we felt! But still scared. Neither of us were able to sleep that night…

Anyway, the official website offers some interesting snippets.

Ooh, The Ring just took a turn for the scarier…
