Look at me not doing work

Ok, Ok, last work-distraction post. The essay’s going really well by the way.

I am subscribed to Jakob Nielsen’s alertbox, which is an email newsletter about useability on the internet. Mr Sir Lord High Chancellor Jakob Nielsen is amazing. His site cuts all the crap and tells people how to make their sites more accessible and easy to use. His work is seminary. Anyway, I found this amazing quote on the website. It is one of his users’ emails to a web company expressing frustration at popup ads.

“You people should be ashamed of yourself! I did not ask to have 3 pop ups come across my screen when I visit you. I do not visit singles sites, and I don’t want to add 4 inches to my penis. As a matter of fact, I don’t use any of the services that pop up on my screen. I think it is disgusting that you money hungry bastards have infringed on my computer for your own selfish gain. From this moment on, I am boycotting you, and I am advising EVERYONE I know to do the same thing. Down with you and your pop up ads.”

Sheer mastery. From http://www.useit.com/alertbox/20041206.html.

Moths and that Bernard guy

OK. People may or may not know about the peppered moth experiment. Basically, I can’t be bothered to tell you about it, but it was supposed to be major proof of natural selection but the experiment has now come under quite serious scrutiny.

Anyway, the guy that did it, Bernard Something-or-other (or it might be Something Bernard) use to eat the moths he was experimenting with. To find out whether a particular moth he was experimenting with was palatable (tasty) or not, he would sit about and eat the moths.

I just thought that was a really funny mental image; this mad scientist sitting at a desk with pots of moths surrounding him, picking one up from time to time and munching on it thoughtfully. Then writing down his discoveries.

Crisis over

Well, since the last post* I had a near nervous breakdown. Seriously, I’ve never felt more out of control and terrified than I did just a while ago. Anyway, happened to go into the library and bumped into a very good friend of mine who calmed me down and talked me through some stuff.

I think I’ve finished all my stats now, so I can log off and go home and finish the rest of the write up at home. Gonna be another all-nighter.

Stupid health scare

I don’t know if people have heard but apparently, male users of laptops are at risk of becoming infertile. Well, I think this is stupid. Basically, if you use a laptop on your lap, it’s supposed to raise the temperature of the, ahem, gonads so that they explode or something.

Quick! Do something about it! Like… well nothing really, cos it’s the stupid media blowing things all out of proportion. A pair of tight pants has the same effect, so in essence, laptops are as dangerous as a pair of pants.

It’s like that thing a while ago about apple juice. They said that there was cyanide in apple juice, and that it could possibly kill someone. It turns out that there’s such a small amount that you’d need such a large volume of apple juice you’d be more likely to drown in it than be poisoned by it.
