Today at Menzies

Rants, Selected ancient posts

Well, last night was one filled with towering rage. Got back from the evening shift, and went to bed at around 1:20 or something. I knew I had to be up at 5 to start the morning shift at 6. Well, as if that wasn’t bad enough, my body decided to play silly buggers with what time I would fall asleep. I recognise that I am wholly to blame for this because of my past lax approach to getting out of bed, and that’s why it’s so annoying!

Couldn’t sleep at all throughout the night, despite feeling sleepy and having heavy eyes. Anyway, I could sense where this was going, and sure enough, around 4:00am, I began to properly start the journey to sleephood. Well, this would have been “fine”, if I’d not been aware that I’d be getting up at 5 anyway. So I went through a cycle of starting to fall asleep, and then being so infuriated at the thought that any sleep I did manage to grasp would be pointless, that I came right back into wakefulness!

After a half hour of this, I thought ‘stuff it’ (and said worse) and got up and got dressed.

Add to my not inconsiderably incandescent fury, my discovery of the shirt I was intending to wear. Having not been able to wash it since the previous night, it was not in a particularly fresh state. Went to wash it on a fast cycle, then realised that the iron was in my parents’ room who were sound asleep. So I had the pleasure of wearing a most delightful shirt to work today.

Anyway, I had a really nice walk down to work, actually, in the pre-dawn. That was actually lovely. In fact it was almost numinous. Arrived at Menzies, and on finding the door I normally use locked, I climbed in through an open window, which was really good fun.

Was told that during my abscence, certain stupid new rules had been brought into place stating that staff working a certain amount of hours were not permitted either a) food, or b) a break! Can you imagine! Does Menzies want to keep their staff, or are they deliberately trying to kill us off. So, it became my mission to steal as much food as I possibly could.

Meanwhile, as you might imagine, all during the shift my lack of sleep was catching up on me. Towards the end, I was nearly drunk with sleepiness, and at one point I actually fell asleep on a table, leaving a little puddle of condensation. Well, it might have been saliva, but we’ll hope it was condensation.

Today’s shift seemed to last for weeks, I’d look at my watch after having not looked at it for ages, and it would only have advanced about a quarter of an hour. This all served to put me in a terrible black mood during which I probably scared a number of my colleagues.

All in all I can probably say that this was the worst shift I think I’ve ever done at Menzies. And I am so looking forward to bed tonight. Anyway, it’s past five, and now I have to watch Voyager!
